Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Port Elizabeth

The original section of the Addo Elephant National Park was founded in 1931, in part due to the efforts of Sydney Skaife, in order to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area.
Cape Town to Oudtshoorn
We depart from Cape Town via Stellenbosch on to the town of Montagu on the scenic ‘Route 62’ to the pretty village of Barrydale where we stop for tea. Then it’s on to Oudtshoorn, known as the ‘feather capital of the world’ thanks to its huge ostrich industry. Here we enjoy a fascinating tour of an ostrich farm. Have you ever wanted to sit on an ostrich? This is an opportunity to view ostrich chicks, touch and feed an ostrich, stand on an ostrich egg and yes, even sit on an ostrich!
Cango Caves then on to Knysna
This morning we go underground to marvel at the icy formations in the Cango Caves, regarded, for good reason, as one of South Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders. Legend has it that Mr. Johnny van Wassenaer, the cave’s first official guide walked 29 hours to find the end of the caves in 1898. He is said to have calculated that he was 25 km from the entrance, and 275m underground. So far, no caves have been found to support this story. Next, we drive via the spectacular Outeniqua Pass towards the town of George, then onto Knysna, one of South Africa’s most visually stunning resort, set in the heart of the famous Garden Route. Spend the rest of the day exploring the town's many art galleries, snooping around stylish craft shops and catching our breath in between by ducking into gorgeous little coffee bars.
Today we cruise the vast Knysna Lagoon. The Lagoon, or more accurately, an estuary, has five fresh water rivers flowing in from the surrounding Outeniqua Mountains to meet the surge of sea water from the Indian Ocean through the mighty headlands, known as the Knysna Heads. These grand sandstone cliffs tower above the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon, and create a striking landmark for miles around. Featherbed Nature Reserve is a stone's throw away, and you'll have sensational views of the Heads from theres, as well as the surrounding forests, marshes and pristine beaches.
After lunch, there's ample time to explore the delightful town of Knysna, named one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Destinations Awards
Knysna to Port Elizabeth
Our route to Port Elizabeth and the airport, takes us through the cool indigenous Tsitsikamma Forest, home to the Big Tree, anancient Outeniqua yellowwood, estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old.

After setting into our accommodation we've a lively afternoon ahead: a Shebeen Tour, to orientate you in the local lownship, unpack the rich textures and complexities of these areas and gain an understanding of the origin and transformation of township in general. We're going to share a drink and mingle with the community in one of the local taverns of New Brighton Township, no finer way to understand about life in a township than from those who live there.
Addo Elephant Park
Addo Elephant Park reputedly offers the finest elephant viewing in South Africa, and we're heading there. There's so much more to these gentle giants than most of us have grasped, and a close-up experience is a great starting point on that journey to understanding. Their family structure, their care for one another, how they grieve. The original section of the park was founded in 1931, in part due to the efforts of Sydney Skaife, in order to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area. The park currently houses over 450 elephants, so you'll be able to watch the indearing interaction within a family of them.
Tour Ends - onward flight
Glamorous ostrich feathers, drinks in a township shebeen, elephants and more. We've plenty to talk about over breakfast, before the transfer to Port Elizabeth Airport for the onward journey
